THIS IS WHY THEY PUT THE WORD ‘GREAT’ IN GREAT BRITAIN: Florence Welch sing-along gig in London Tube!

ImageCold sunday in London. A beautiful cape of fresh snow covers the city. Fairytale landscape across streets, canals and parks. The city slows down but does not stop and the weather conditions do not prevent thousands of people to go all the way to the Hammersmith Apollo for a Kendrik Lamar‘s concert, the new rap sensation everyone loves to love.

Among the Lamar’s lovers also Florence + the Machine‘s spectacular singer Florence Welch cuts across the snowy town to get a taste of the rising star’s musical magic, and just as anyone else she jumped in an underground tube carriage to quietly head back home after the concert.

It took fans less than a minute to realise that the red-headed girl going for a low profile sitting next to them was chanteuse-extraordinaire Florence Welch and happily start singing  “You got the Love” to pay a cheerful tribute to such a special traveling pal.

The great part of this story is that Florence did not bail out of the uncalled for moment of happy crowd hysteria, quite the opposite! She started singing her hit song along with ecstatic fans and treated the whole tube coach to a one-off live cover of Lamar’s “Backseat Freestyle“!!!

Next time someone will ask what is so great about this country and this city, please start singing along… WE GOT THE LOVE!

BIRTHDAY FINISSAGE TO THE SEXY SOUND OF INC.

Ending my Brithday at Birthdays (ho cool is that??!!!?) I slided into my new age rocked by the sound of LA based band INC. (aka Andrew and Daniel Aged). The duo spent solid music making years supporting big names such as Pharrell Williams, 50 cents and Beck. Their upcoming 4AD album is due in 2013, but the song The Place is already surfacing the web.

Now, imagine an almost 2 hours show of this sexy Prince-like sound. I could not hope to end my birthday with a better soundtrack!

THINGS I LOVE: music+film = MUSIC VIDEOS!!!

music video stillPeople who know me for a while know that a longtime fixation of mine is cool MUSIC VIDEOS. I loved them since I was lucky enough to first set my eyes on MTV (before Viacom bought it to turn it into a slick reality shows inferno). There was a time I watched them by the hundreds on my TV, and a time when I was lucky enough to watch them by the thousands for work in the days I assisted Femke Wolting at the International Film Festival Rotterdam. Through music videos I followed the raise of incredible filmmakers, such as Michel Gondry, David Fincher, Jonathan Glazer, Chris Cunningham, Spike Jonze and so many others. I appreciated old school narrative videoclips as well as new school graphic ones. I simply couldn’t have enough of them, because – besides the good music – it seemed to me that in videoclips filmmakers were left free to experiment and have fun right at the boundaries of story-telling, being allowed at the same time to build new paths to film aesthetics & narrative, creating a new lingo for us to enjoy. Non-linear storytelling went straight from that. Dreamy and dearing universes of many of the films we apreciate today also came from that. Music Videos.

So, here I am, a few years down the road, still loving video clips and looking for the new ones that will make me shiver in excitement, which does not happen that much these days, I have to admit…not untill today! When, from my bed where I lay with a flue, I started looking for new clips to add to my collection and foud this:

DIANE BIRCH – VELENTINO by Dennis Liu

Like all great things in life, the video looks incredibly simple, but it took some hard-core coordination to choreograph and basic augmented reality skills to produce. And that’s why I like it: simplicity that comes from ingenious technics, great professional skills, hard work all mixed up with the magic ingredients called creativity and vision. Thumbs up in the sky!

the video is mind-blowing!

and so is the “behind the screen” unveiling how they managed to make it. Awsome!
